The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
